Centuries old house discovered at Maharaj Gunj

An old house believed to be constructed in 12th century was discovered after a road caved in at Maharaj Gunj in Shaher-e-Khaas on Wednesday.
Centuries old house discovered at Maharaj GunjPanic gripped Sakhalpora Wazpora area of Maharaj Gunj after the road caved in and people discovered a house beneath it. Police rushed to the spot and restricted movement of people there.  The structure is made up of bricks and stones. Pertinently, the spot lies close to the tomb of 15th century king, Zain-ul-Abidin popularly known as Budshah.
“House of a Kashmiri Pandit was built at the spot. However, the family migrated in 1990s and the house was razed last year to pave way road widening. At that time, I had noticed a small hole on the spot but did not give much importance to it. Today, when officials of the Roads and Buildings department started repairs of the road, I showed them pile of red colored soil near the hole. Suddenly, the road caved in exposing the old structure beneath,” Abdul Rashid, a resident of Sakhalpora told.
Director, Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K, Muhammad Shafi Zahid said “I will send a team of experts to the spot on Thursday to assess make and age of the structure.”
Noted historian, Fida Hasnain said “the house seemingly belongs to 12th century. The tomb was 12th century king Sultan Shahab-ud-Din was also situated in the area.”
